Stand Up for Standing Trees Enviro Show

[Hear our podcast of the show HERE

Greetings Earthlings.  Obviously many people in Washington, DC have gone over the cliff into the MAGA Pit of Delusion & Hate. They represent some 30% or so of the U.S. population but some of them may have realized the error of their way. Regardless, the rest of us are here and many of us are standing up & fighting back. Chris Gish, Community Organizer at Standing Trees joins us to talk about building resistance to MAGA's War on Nature. As always, we will also poke fun at this week's Fool-on-the-Hill, Those Whose brains Were small and, of course, our ever-present reminder that "It's the Climate Crisis, Stupid!" and more but first it's time for........Revenge of the Critters!  Bear vs.....team mascot

This week's Fool-on-the-Hill goes plural as "Six Republican members of the U.S. Congress have sent a letter to Canada’s ambassador calling for action on the wildfires sending smoke billowing across the international border into their states. In a letter to Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman, representatives Tom Tiffany, Brad Finstad, Tom Emmer, Michelle Fischbach, Glenn Grothman, and Pete Stauber of Wisconsin and Minnesota said their constituents are coping with suffocating smoke from Canadian wildfires. "As we are entering the height of the fire season, we would like to know how your government plans on mitigating wildfires and the smoke that makes its way south,” the letter said. “We’ll keep our smoke, when you keep your CO2,” a commenter suggested as Canada’s official response. Mitigate smoke? How about blowing smoke?

"Their Brains Were small and They Died" segment this week goes to Repugnican dinosaurs in the U.S. Senate who gave the green light to one of the worst beasts in the jungle. We talked about faux "news" monster Jeanine Pirro on the last show as a horrible choice for U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, a position progressive critics and Democratic opponents warn she is deeply unqualified to hold. Now they've gone and stepped in it. This throwback to eras long gone will do untold damage to what ever semblance of justice is left in the U.S.

On to our Doublespeak of the Week. Apparently in 2019 – His Malignancy earned the US National Council of Teachers of English Doublespeak Award "for perpetuating language that is grossly deceptive, evasive, euphemistic, confusing, and self-centered." The following year they gave it to "The phrase “China Virus” and those who use it" (same guy, of course). Then they gave up entirely, presumably 'cuz The Mad King overwhelmed them with his endless bullshit. At least they could have given him a lifetime achievement award. This week we can't think of anyone who deserves it more. You?

We guess that takes us to His Malignancy's latest assaults on the nation and Planet Earth?  Assaults like the plot to steal the 2026 elections for starters. You'll find out about it in New York University School of Law... new report, The Trump Administration's Campaign to Undermine the Next Election, which aims to "connect the dots" on a host of maneuvers by the White House." Obviously the Cheating Liar-in-Chief is fixated on clinging to power even though only about a third of voters want him anywhere near Washington, DC. Not surprisingly, MAGA Mike and his traitorous minions in congress want to help out in that goal by underfunding the elections. For now however, His Malignancy's Cabinet of Horrors' Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller is poised to drive another stake through the heart of the Constitution. Back on May 9, "Miller told reporters that the administration is considering whether to suspend the right to habeas corpus...in immigration cases." Do you think The Mad King would stop there?  In terms of the environment check this out: The Mad King's "Environmental Protection Agency has proposed to reapprove the pesticide that courts have twice struck down." Why continue doing the right thing to protect critters when you can go backwards and do all the wrong things??  Backwards like this from Tipping Point: The "Administration’s Department of Energy just released a report that distorts climate science and spreads dangerous misinformation — and now, the scientists whose work it misrepresents are fighting back. The report downplays the role of fossil fuels in warming, claims greenhouse gases have a “minimal” impact on the U.S., and argues that cutting emissions is pointless." O wait, maybe that should be the Doublespeak Report of the Week? Finally (while we're at it) "now the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is planning to make pollution standards for mercury and other toxic substances like lead and arsenic up to 70% weaker for power plants."

Our Critter of the Week brings a bit of good news with it: "In encouraging news, the eastern monarch butterfly population nearly doubled in 2025, according to a new report announced in Mexico. The population wintering in central Mexico's forests occupied 4.42 acres, up from 2.22 acres during the previous winter. While monarchs occupied nearly twice as much forest habitat as last year, populations remain far below the long-term average." There are tons of webpages and videos like this one where you can learn more about Monarchs (#NoKings ...sorry). Help out these beautiful critters. These are monarchs that deserve our support.

Speaking of critters that deserve our support, what do you think is their biggest challenge? "It's the Climate Crisis, Stupid!" And speaking of stupid, how about this headline: "E.P.A. Is Said to Draft a Plan to End Its Ability to Fight Climate Change"?  No, that's not from The Onion, it's from a July 22nd issue of The New York Times. We spoke about His Malignancy and the damaged goods of MAGA going backwards earlier, right? It's one of their biggest obsessions (next to white nationalism, male domination, revisionist history, fascism, actual stupidity?). Another example from Inside Climate News: "The U.S. delegation was a no-show [at an international wetlands summit] until the final days of the summit, when one American representative came to demand that conference documents include no mention of climate change, DEI, gender, the U.N.’s sustainable development goals, or “zero growth.” Sadly, it's not just them, they seem to be dragging us all back with them? Maybe not. Again, another Times headline: "As U.S. Retreats on Climate, China and Europe Pledge to Go Green Together." Here in the states we can move on as well.

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we rerun a multi-group effort to garner support for The Endangered Species Act that's always under attack from the MAGA freak show. Also, how about we "Tell Congress to stand up for voting rights and block any proposal that defunds our freedom to vote! OK, why stop now? How about "Tell Your Governor: Don't hand over data to ICE or other federal agencies"? And  ACT NOW to protect Pangolins. Finally, stop logging on public land on Martha's Vineyard HERE

Moving on, let's see about our good old Enviro Show Quote of the Week? This is in keeping with our guest and the Green Mountain National Forest presently under threat:

“We must protect the forests for our children, grandchildren and children yet to be born. We must protect the forests for those who can’t speak for themselves such as the birds, animals, fish and trees.”

— Qwatsinas (Hereditary Chief Edward Moody), Nuxalk Nation

A No New Nukes Enviro Show

[ Listen to the show on our podcast HERE ]
Greetings Earthlings from the historic heart of the anti-nuclear movement here in Northeast USA. We thought we drove a well deserved stake into the heart of the corrupt nuclear industry and its followers long ago but, like vampires some things keep coming back. Deb Katz of the Citizens Awareness Network returns to the show as we shine some daylight into the crypt (be sure to scroll down to the bills on Beacon Hill).  As always we will also introduce you to this week's Fool-on-the-Hill and "Those Whose Brains Were small", as well as our "...of the Week" segments and way more but first it's time for.....Revenge of the Critters! The classic No Nukes cow button got us thinking about when cows attack!

This week's Fool-on-the-Hill was just cutting his teeth in Congress when this report came in: "As a state lawmaker in Florida, Republican Rep. Randy Fine earned a reputation as a bombastic far-right politician who enjoyed picking ugly fights. Three months into his tenure in Congress, the GOP congressman isn’t exactly turning over a more respectable leaf. NBC News reported: 'Top House Democrats defended Rep. Ilhan Omar after Rep. Randy Fine made an Islamophobic retort toward Omar for her criticism of [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu.'.....The entirety of the House Democratic leadership issued a related joint written statement around the same time. “The unhinged, racist and Islamophobic comments made by Randy Fine about Rep. Ilhan Omar are bigoted and disgusting,”  No fool like a new fool, we guess.

On to "Their Brains Were Small and They Died" where we find a live dinosaur disguised  as Oklahoma's Superintendent of Public InstructionMSNBC informs us: "Ryan Walters has cultivated a reputation as a right-wing Christian nationalist — even some Republicans have expressed discomfort with his radicalism — prompting discussion among legislators in the state about possible impeachment proceedings." This MAGA throwback's “greatest hits” collection is not short. A state requirement that Oklahoma educators keep Christian Bibles in every classroom and incorporate his preferred holy text into public school curricula? That was Waters. Threatening the teaching licenses of school teachers who resisted his demands for Bible lessons? That was Waters, too. Walters has called an Oklahoma teachers' union a “terrorist organization.” He’s partnered with a far-right propaganda outlet, bringing its materials into classrooms. He pushed a social studies curriculum guidance that directed educators to push pro-Trump conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election." We guess Walters is hoping for a place on the Rapture Express at some point but given all his bullshit......maybe not so much.

We guess it should be no surprise faux Christians like Ryan Walters is also the subject in our Doublespeak of the Week. The very same MSNBC article that exposed his o-so-holy fanaticism also informs us "A sheriff’s office in Oklahoma is investigating an incident during a state Board of Education meeting last week that reportedly involved images of naked women on the state school superintendent’s office television. The images were seen during the board’s executive session, held in Superintendent Ryan Walters’ office." Yo Walters, what about this: "You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and of her daughter, and you shall not take her son's daughter or her daughter's daughter to uncover her nakedness; they are relatives; it is depravity." ?  Leviticus 18:17 ) 😳

Enough with the lesser lights of MAGA, how about His Malignancy The Mad King? First off, is he crazy enought to start a war with Russia?? If not, how about  plans to steal upcoming elections HERE. Next, let's be clear about so-called "presidential immunity". The Founders had no such thing in mind. We have No Kings in the USA, OK?  We call him The Mad King 'cuz he is out of his mind thinking he is a king. Nevertheless, he keeps doing things like this: "The three scientists joined the administration after it dismissed hundreds of experts who were assessing how global warming is affecting the country."  And this: "Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, said on Tuesday the Trump administration would revoke the scientific determination that underpins the government’s legal authority to combat climate change." And this: "Planning documents for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, obtained by The New York Times, call for the organization to set a new course that focuses on “transitioning” countries away from U.S. assistance, some in as little as two years."  It's said that the buck stops on The President's desk, so when reports reveal, "Two days after deadly Texas floods, the agency [FEMA] struggled to answer calls from survivors because of call center contracts that weren’t extended [by the Administration]" that's not only on Kristy Noam but His Malignancy as well. Of course there's more: "Soon after [the] President took office in January, a wide array of petrochemical, mining and farm industry coalitions ramped up what has been a long campaign to limit use of the Environmental Protection Agency’s assessments of the health risks of chemicals. That effort scored a significant victory... when EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced his decision to dismantle the agency’s Office of Research and Development".  Zeldin earlier wrote that he drove "a dagger straight into the heart of the climate change religion” by weakening regulations on power plants, fossil fuel companies and automobiles." Presumably he was referring to respect for life on Earth as "climate religion"?  Finally, something that really stinks!  Sorry about the gag refex, but we couldn't resist. Another of His Malignancy's soon-to-fail golden self-aggrandizing grifts. He calls them "fragrances", others call it "MAGA stench!" You have to see it to believe it, which reminds us of His Malignancy's personal lawyer Emil Bove's odd resemblance to the vampire in Nosferatu who was confirmed by MAGA freaks in the Senate handing over a lifetime appointment on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit to this creep. Wait, does Bove even go out in the daytime??

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we celebrate (FINALLY!) the end of UMass Amherst torture labs with this from PETA! Also,  we pass on this notice from Civic Shout on putting an end to trophy hunting (one of Donald Jr's faves, which figures). Not only is the practice as retro as buggy whips but so-called Big Game is going extinct at the hands of overgrown boys who should know better. And this from Common Dreams: "'Unequivocal': Israeli Human Rights Orgs Describe Gaza Assault as 'Genocide' for the First Time."  Of course, Israeli fascists will call them self-hating Jews or worse. Speaking of worse, one of the worse MAGA freaks to ever set foot onto the public stage is being nominated to be U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia – one of the most sensitive and consequential prosecutorial roles in the country. She is none other than Fox News sociopath Jeanine Pirro. "Pirro has repeatedly excused the January 6th attack, defended Trump’s pardons of convicted rioters, and attacked the DOJ prosecutors who brought those cases – including staff in the very office she now leads. She’s called January 6th defendants “hostages,” promoted conspiracy theories about the 2020 election." Wait, did we mention what a god-awful person she is?? Go HERE and say "NO!"  Finally,  the clock is ticking for old-growth forests  in VT and usual suspects like Audubon are part of the plan. Be Prepared!

We're melding Critter of the Week this time with Tree of the Week 'cuz some amazing news came to us from one of our listeners. The headline reads: "These fig trees absorb CO2 from the air and convert it into stone." Say what??  "We all know that trees are an important part of our climate efforts. But we usually envision this as lush forests soaking up carbon dioxide through their leaves and storing it as wood. What if trees could go a step further, not just locking away carbon in their trunks, but converting it into actual stone? That’s exactly what a new study has uncovered about certain fig trees in Kenya. These trees aren’t just carbon sinks. They’re advanced chemists. They get a bit of help from microbes, [Thanks little critters] and together, they pull carbon dioxide from the air and turn it into calcium carbonate (the same material in chalk or limestone). This crystallized material then gets stashed deep inside the wood and in the surrounding soil. It’s a slow and hidden process but its implications could be huge." Huge indeed. Other types of Fig Trees are now being studied, perhaps other Trees all together.

Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week takes us to our interview with Deb Katz:

Flint is to the lead issue what Three Mile Island was to nuclear power. People are stepping back and thinking, 'There still is lead in my home?'

Dick Durbin

Saturday August 16, 11am to 12:30pm.  412 Main St, Ashfield, MA. The Texas House Democrats are denying quorum to stop the Trump takeover of Texas and block his attempt to rig the 2026 midterm elections. But Trump isn’t stopping in Texas. He’s targeting Missouri, Ohio, Florida, and every state he can twist to help him steal Congress next year. States like California and New York are starting to fight back. This isn’t just about redistricting or one state’s politics. It’s about the future of our democracy. Trump knows he can’t win on his ideas, so he’s trying to take Congress by hook or by crook--and he’s doing it by silencing the voices of communities of color. That’s why we’re organizing a National Day of Action, on Saturday, August 16, to fight back against the Trump takeover of our country.  Go HERE.

Thursday August 28, 6 to 8pm.  The Plymouth Airport Community Advisory Committee meeting. The Airport Commission wants to hear from more of us if you are impacted, upset, disturbed by the noise from the loud, low flying planes, the repetition of training school circling over the same areas, the jets ignoring the noise abatement policy, the JETS period! As many times that you are impacted, if you don’t let the airport know every time, they don’t know you are impacted. If you do not let the airport and the town officials know you do not want more issues with an expansion, the expansion will happen. Administrative Building Conference Room,  246 South Meadow Road, Plymouth, MA.  Go HERE.

Solar energy is now the cheapest source of power on the planet—and gives us a chance to actually do something about the climate crisis.
