Another Summer Solstice Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. Perhaps by the time you read this Summer Solstice will be behind us and S.2288/H.3549 and S.2287/H.3548 biomass bills will have come before a hearing in the MA Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. Who knows where the biomass issue goes from there? Susan Theberge working with the Springfield Climate Justice Coalition on the Springfield Zombie biomass monster join us to answer some burning questions. As usual, we will also have you meet this week's Fool-on-the-Hill and Those Whose Brains Were small, along with other "..of the Week" selections and the eternal reminder that "It's the Climate Crisis, Stupid!" but first it's time for..........Revenge of the Critters! Captured Croc crashes plane?

This week's Fool-on-the-Hill is actually worse than a fool. Repugnican Senator Mike Lee of Utah is the subhuman MAGA bullshit artist who recently "....faced ridicule for calling the suspect of fatal shootings in Minnesota a “Marxist.” [it was obvious to all the shooter was 100% documented MAGA] “This is what happens ... When Marxists don’t get their way,” the Utah senator captioned a photo of alleged gunman Vance Boelter wearing a latex face mask. The Utah senator also shared another post of Boelter with the caption, “Nightmare on Waltz Street.” [referring to Dem Governor Waltz]. Did we mention Lee's effort to  privatize our public lands?

In keeping with the above we have Repugnican Senator Bernie Moreno to thank for our Doublespeak of the Week on the same issue.  Moreno posted on X the b.s. about the Minnesota shooter being a leftist: "The degree to which the extreme left has become radical, violent, and intolerant is both stunning and terrifying."  Along with a another MAGA operative's photo of fake No King "fliers" looking for all the world like props fresh from the copy shop. Duplicitous doublespeak!

These lowlife MAGA fascists are, of course, all in with His Malignancy The Mad King who has been up to his usual egomaniacal machinations trying to establish a fascist "reality" show for himself in spite of the U.S. Constitution. Last week's #NoKings actions however said....Nah! in a big way. As he and his cosplaying Defense Secretary Hegseth were sending troops to DC for The Mad King's pathetic B-Day Parade and into LA,  His Malignancy found time to "quietly slip a chainsaw into the Senate budget reconciliation bill. A very large, very destructive chainsaw — programmed to chew through 3.3 million acres of public land. That’s nearly the size of Connecticut." The podcast goes on to note: "... it was wrapped in the usual flaming garbage rhetoric about “freedom,” “streamlining,” and “cutting red tape,” which in this case translates directly to: handing public property to private developers while smiling for the cameras and blaming Joe Biden." And this from Inside Climate News: "The...administration has long touted the downsizing and elimination of national monuments, and a legal opinion from the Department of Justice argues that the president has the power to do that." Yes, The Mad King's so-called Department of Justice headed by snarling Cruella wannabee Pam Bondi. The Center for American Progress has been keeping track of His Malignancy's unconstitutional actions. It's a lot.

Enough doom scrolling, let's look for something lighter in our Critter of the Week. At d.o.'s place several species of Humming Birds visit the garden every year. They are a marvel. "Fifteen types of hummingbirds can be found living in the United States, along with nine vagrant species that occasionally wander inside our borders. Even though hummingbirds might weigh less than your pocket change, don't let their tiny size fool you! These small birds can be feisty and were even considered to be the reincarnations of warriors by the Aztecs" the American Bird Conservancy tells us. We could use some warrior birds these days but we guess we'd need a lot. That said, The NY Times informs us a lot were discovered recently together: "They are among the most aggressive birds in the avian kingdom. Their territorial fury is especially aimed at other hummingbirds. Competition over a patch of flowers or a mate often results in high-speed aerial chases, divebombing and beak jousting. So when Gustavo Cañas-Valle, an ornithologist and birding guide, stumbled across a cave full of hummingbirds nesting and roosting together in Ecuador’s High Andes, he could hardly believe it. “I thought, ‘This looks like a colony,’” Mr. Cañas-Valle said. He added, “They were like bees.” Perhaps there's a lesson in this for us humans?

It may be a stretch but is it possible those Humming Birds are aware that "It's the Climate Crisis, Stupid!" ?  Over the years we've talked about the dangers of fossil fuels and ocean acidification in terms of natural carbon capture. That's why we are disturbed when we read this header on Inside Climate News: "The World’s Oceans Are a ‘Ticking Time Bomb,’ Reaching Dangerous Acidification Levels  Earlier Than Scientists Thought." The piece went on: "A study, published  in the journal Global Change Biology, found that ocean acidification—the process in which the world’s oceans absorb excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, becoming more acidic—crossed a “planetary boundary” five years ago.....Scientists had determined that ocean acidification enters this danger zone or crosses this planetary boundary when the amount of calcium carbonate—which allows marine organisms to develop shells—is less than 20 percent compared to pre-industrial levels. The new report puts the figure at about 17 percent."  The oceans are the greatest source of natural carbon capture on the planet, by the way.  As we always point out, forests and trees are also an important aspect to natural carbon capture. Will residents of the Commonwealth please take a moment to help out by clicking to sign a petition to state legislators to preserve state forests and to expand and preserve urban tree canopies across Massachusetts? Finally, it seems the Climate Crisis has opened the door to unfriendly fungus. Have you been watching "The Last of Us" ?

Remember when the Environmental Protection Agency actually protected? Now "Their Brains are small and, apparently They Died? Mother Jones has the story: "The... administration on Wednesday announced plans to rescind and postpone rules limiting “forever chemicals” in drinking water that were enacted under the Biden administration and designed to prevent millions of people from exposure to these persistent and dangerous contaminants. Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, said the agency plans to issue new rules this fall that would repeal drinking water levels for four PFAS chemicals and delay the implementation of limits on two others.....New data shows that PFAS are found at more than 8,500 drinking water sources across all 50 states and Washington, DC.  Recent research has found that PFAS in ocean waters can disrupt carbon cycles, increasing climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions."  We guess the dinosaurs are back and ignoring the asteroid yet again.

Time for our Enviro Show Quote of the Week. Here's an appropriate one...

Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it.

A Standup Fight Back Enviro Show

[ Listen to our podcast of this show https://rss.com/podcasts/enviroshow/2074060/ ] Greetings Earthlings. We trust you've noticed all the standouts and demos against MAGA & His Malignancy of late? That knid of push back and more is exactly what we need to save this nation from itself. We have a LOT of that this week. As always, we will also bring you along to meet this week's Fool-on-the-Hill and "Those Whose Brains Were small", as well as treat you to our "...of the Week" entries and more but first it's time for........Revenge of the Critters! Double trouble for Peggy.

This week's Fool-on-the-Hill deserves our praise for making the job of reporting so f'ing easy. Repugnican Sen. Jodi  Ernst who recently angered constituents at a Town Hall meeting in Iowa  "Senator Dismisses Medicaid Cuts Killing People: ‘Well, We’re All Going to Die’" does it again turning a  "Non-Apology Into a Twofer". It seems she took to social media's hellhole, X with a b.s. church lady cosplay in a cemetery  where ".. Ernst—who is up for reelection in 2026—says at the outset that she is "sincerely" sorry for her remarks on Friday, it becomes clear the apology is nothing but a troll of her critics when she adds that she "assumed that everyone in the auditorium understood that, yes, we are all going to perish from this earth....So I apologize," said Ernst. "And I'm really, really glad that I did not have to bring up the subject of the Tooth Fairy as well." Boom! Iowa voters remorse, anyone?

More MAGA cruelty coming in "Their Brains Were small And They Died" segment. This time it took almost the entire Repugnican House of Reprehensibles to display their lack of decency with the Mother Jones headline "House GOPers Just Voted for the Biggest Medicaid Cuts in History—After Promising to Protect It".  Hopefully, cooler heads in the Senate will pull the rug out from under these dinosaurs. Time will tell. One thing's for sure, these MAGA evil clown show freaks will eventually rue the day they threw the old Republican Party into the chipper. Speaking of, did you hear about the bromance between His Malignancy & Elon? According to the Progressive Change Campaign Committee: "Elon Musk is saying he will work to defeat Republicans who vote for this bill." ! Sadly, the Committee is using this MAGA meltdown moment for yet another donation pitch but checkout the rest: "Elon Musk just called Trump's bill cutting taxes for billionaires a "disgusting abomination." He's right. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson says Elon is mad because he wants more self-dealing giveaways for his car company. He's right. Marjorie Taylor Greene says the bill she voted for is bad for helping Big Tech stop states from regulating Artificial Intelligence. She's right. Senate Republican budget hawks say Trump's bill would add trillions to the national debt. [Yup]. All those small brains eating their own. Too bad.    😉

Sticking with sickening, we find His Malignancy's EPA coming up with some Doublespeak of the Week. "The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has drafted a plan to eliminate all limits on greenhouse gases from coal and gas-fired power plants in the United States, the New York Times reported on Saturday, citing internal agency documents." reports Reuters"The EPA argued in its [new] proposed regulation that carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from power plants that burn fossil fuels "do not contribute significantly to dangerous pollution" or to climate change because they are a small and declining share of global emissions, according to the NYT report." Really? No, just doublespeak.

And just to round out those we wish were thrown out, let's see what His Malignancy The Mad King has been up to. But first, in terms of push back: "Climate scientists are hosting a 100-hour YouTube livestream in response to [His Malignancy's] research funding cuts." That's right, mild mannered folks in lab coats "More than 200 climate and weather scientists from across the U.S. are...planning to share their scientific work and answer questions from viewers for a grand total of 100 hours over the course of five days. The event is non-partisan, and aims to prove the value of climate science in light of the Trump administration's funding cuts to organizations like NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF)." Kudos to all. Here's a header that needs no further explanation but is just another surreal example of The Mad King's failings, He could  "..Get Fox News-Style Intel Briefings Because He ‘Doesn’t Read’"  Onto disturbing news so stunning we are temporarily breaking our "He whose name shall not be spoken" rule. The New Republic did a feature titled, "Trump Taps Palantir to Create Master Database on Every American - Trump’s dystopian plan is already underway." Of course, most of us assumed this was the DOGE game plan and knew well His Malignancy et al was game-on for a fascist wet dream but to see it spelled in a banner headline was.....well, a shocker. The piece goes on, "The New York Times reports that President Trump has enlisted the firm, founded by far-right billionaire Peter Thiel, to carry out his March executive order instructing government agencies to share data with each other. The order has increased fears that the government is putting together a database to wield surveillance powers over the American public." So, given the evil scheme is still a work-in-progress we all have time for some truly serious push back; something far more powerful and all encompassing than we have been doing. Sadly, some Dems in leadership positions seem clueless about the dangers: "Two weeks after declaring that the Trump administration's arrest of members of Democratic members of Congress would be a "red line," the top-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House this week was signaling no concrete plan to take action over the Justice Department charging a congresswoman and federal agents detaining a Capitol Hill aide."  Maybe you might want to register your own opposition to His Malignancy's cruelty?

Let's brighten it up a bit with our Critter of the Week. Did you notice that some Dragonflies are back this season? These guys are amazing in so many ways but most notably is their ability to turn on a dime in pursuit of mosquitos and other flying insects. Us humans owe them a debt of gratitude for riding us of many disease carrying mosquitos. That said, many of the Dragonflies themselves are at risk. So called “insectageddon” is a very real threat, not just to the critters but to us humans who rely on beneficial insects. The good news is there are steps you can take to help Dragonflies in your own neighborhood. Checkout this PDF for news on that. Also, since we're talking critters, please contact your reps regarding the highly endangered North Atlantic Right Whales and others HERE.

We endeavor to look for more upbeat stories on the show but unfortunately, given the reality of The War on Nature we keep coming up with more bad news like these in our Enviro Show Echo Chamber. Not sure which to start with, the micro or macro? Let's go with a small story of local outrage even though it's an example of a far reaching human disregard. Here's the headline in The New York Times: "Downtown L.A. Has Seen Its Share of Violence. Then Someone Went After Its Trees." We'll spare you the gruesome details but the lone actions of one disturbed individual is summed up in the story with this telling quote: 'Even after the arrest, the experience has been unnerving for many. “What could be a tree today can be a person tomorrow “It’s scary.” Anthropocentric mindsets are pervasive and telling. On to the macro! It turns out trees are under more of a threat than we even knew. Some species are going extinct. All the more reason to #EndLoggingOnPublicLand. We've run out of segments to reveal just how awful Elon Musk actually is but this video may best describe the living, breathing monster Bill Gates ID'd as "The world's richest man killing the worlds poorest children". It's not hyperbole. And this: Another gift to the Takers from the High Court: "In a case called Seven County Infrastructure Coalition v. Eagle County, the Supreme Court undermined the principle that the government must consider predictable environmental harms before approving big projects."  And some good activist news, Wildlife for All has just come to our attention and they do good works like this.  Finally, some news on World Oceans Day.

All this doom & gloom and still "It's the Climate Crisis, Stupid!" That and the present occupants in the White House making it worse.  "Under the..administration, the EPA has canceled or interrupted hundreds of grants aimed at improving health and severe weather preparedness because the agency “determined that the grant applications no longer support administration priorities,” according to an emailed statement to Grist."  We know what those priorities are and we call bullshit! Speaking of b.s. how about this: "The US government stole the Black Hills. Now it’s clear-cutting them." The Grist piece goes on: "..an executive order on March 1 ordered “immediate expansion” of timber production; and most recently, in April, came an “emergency” directive from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to fast-track logging on nearly 60 percent of the Black Hills.....The directive also conflicts with a memorandum of understanding signed here just last year between the Forest Service and eight tribal nations of the Oceti Sakowin Oyate, which called for cooperative planning on forest management on issues ranging from climate protection and remediation to workforce development and the protection of cultural resources and sacred sites." Finally this: The new podcast "Sabotage” raises a key question: Are “radical” climate activists really that radical? After all, the suffragettes actually slashed famous paintings, and “Sunflowers,” despite all the uproar over the soup incident, still sits untarnished in the National Gallery. All kinds of people have gotten arrested in order to bring attention to climate change, as the podcast documents, including climate scientists and a doctor motivated by how a warmer world spreads infectious diseases. If you take a clear-eyed look at what climate change means for life on this planet, Ram and Oltman ask, what’s the sane thing to do?" This one is decidedly NOT the thing to do: "New Executive Order Promotes Deep Sea Mining in US and International Waters While Bypassing International Law - Critics call for an industry moratorium until more scientific data can be obtained about fragile deep sea ecosystems."

Time to pass on our Enviro Show Quote of the Week:
