The Commonwealth Enviro Show

Greetings Earthling. What's the state of our state environmentally speaking? Massachusetts State Sen. Stan Rosenberg calls-in with the details. Lots to cover, take the Wind Energy Siting Reform Act for instance! In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we review the recent climate actions in New York & Pittsburgh. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Rep. Steve Kulik seems ready to save the old-growth in our Commonwealth. We'll lay the Enviro Show Quote of the Week on you, return to our new "Meet the New Boss" segment, and tour the Bus Stop Billboard, but first it's time for.... Revenge of the Critters! Who put the Bee in baseball? Was the swarm fed up with the astroturf?

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week is from David Susuki:

"The human brain now holds the key to our future. We have to recall the image of the planet from outer space: a single entity in which air, water, and continents are interconnected. That is our home."

In the E-Valley-uation segment the Shut it Down Affinity Group is at it again!

We open up The Enviro Show Echo Chamber to the words of Rep. Steve Kulik. It's good news/bad news for the old growth trees in the Commonwealth. If only our VFR Time Machine was in working order, we might save those old trees on Mt. Wacchusetts the Crowley's destroyed years ago! And this: Pirates raid UN sideshow!. The Climate IMC reports that a well-endowed Greenpeace did a monster banner hang at the G20 in Pittsburgh (why do THEY get all the nice toys??). Finally, our Enviro Show Blog Bonus Specials! Star Wars for Idiots!. And that faux New York Post the Yes Men put out during the UN Climate Summit.

We return to our "Meet the New Boss" segment with another disheartening look at Obama's EPA & U.S. Fish & Wildlife. Yes, we thought he could!

[Here's the updates on those State Senate & House Bills we talked about with Stan. The newly introduced bottle bills are HERE. Rep. Peter Kocot's Act Prohibiting Clear Cuttingin State Forests and Parks is H765. Rep. Kulik's Act establishing old-growth reserves is H.1381. Call your reps supporting these bills.....OK?]

The Noise Free Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. Is it getting way too loud out there? Shall we kick all our sound effects to the curb? Would you rather hear dead air?? Ted Rueter of Noise Free America calls-in to sound-off. In our E-Valley-uation segment it's hi-ho, off to the fair! Also, it's Climate SOS in The Enviro Show Echo Chamber. As always, we'll checkout the Enviro Show Quote of the Week and The Bus Stop Billboard, but first it's time for.... Revenge of the Critters! Warning shoppers: Tubiflex Worms at six o'clock!

Our Quote of the Week is on theme. We jump back in the Wayback Machine to hear words of wisdom from good old Ben Franklin:

"The worst wheel of the cart makes the most noise"

In the E-Valley-uation segment we reminisce about last week's Franklin County Fair Parade (guess who brought the "Entering Brownfield" banner?). We had a Biomess booth and the Flying Wallendas got lots of air-time! Also, it's referendum season. Time to advance the peoples' voice. This year the Stop spewing carbon initiative! And, MORE!

What are we hearing in The Enviro Show Echo Chamber? An echo, right?? Sort of: it's the return of the carbon tax but in FRANCE!. Wake-up America!! And this Enviro Show Blog Bonus: Massachusetts' disappearing forests! Also, Why is the "Greenest City" silencing green voices?

The natural sounds of way late summer takes us to our interview with Ted Rueter of Noise Free America. Just think, soon you'll be serenaded by armies of leaf blowers and obnoxious snowmobiles!

Cape Bag 'o Wind Enviro Show, Part II

Greetings Earthlings. It's down to the sea once again! This time: still trying to save Nantucket Sound from Big Wind corporados and their privatizing friends at GreenPee! (did i spell that right?). We talk with Audra Parker, Executive Director of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound about the issues and D.O. reports back from the line in the ....umm...sea? In our E-Valley-uation segment Jana Chicone nearly gets busted for free speech on the Russell Biomess and in the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we recall Ted Kennedy's good work for Mother Earth. As always we do the Quote of the Week and checkout the Bus Stop Billboard, but first it's time for... Revenge of the Critters! No, Revenge of the Octopus!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from the late Ted Kennedy:
"There is no morality in the mushroom cloud. The black rain will fall equally on the just and the unjust. And the world that is left in the ashes of Armageddon will little note nor long remember which was the evil empire."

And in the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we mourn the loss of The Lion of the U.S. Senate and review his long record of environmental legislation. Also, from the Center for Biological Diversity, Bat Alert: they need your help NOW! Finally, this Enviro Show Blog Action Special: Climate SOS!

In our E-Valley-uation segment we checkout Biomass Buzz for the near arrest of arch foe of the proposed Russell Biomess, Jana Chicone for exercising her First Ammendment Rights. Our link takes you to the cast of players. Looks like they're straight out of central casting!

Leading up to our interview with Audra Parker on the proposed Cape Wind/Bad Wind industrial project, D.O. gives a brief report-back from the frontlines on Martha's Vineyard where he had letters in both local papers and engaged in outreach wars with Greenpeace corporado supporters! Did we mention that the Wampanoags are opposed to the Cape Wind siting because it would be on sacred grounds? Yo Greenpeace? Are you listening?? See photos of GreenPee's corporate tactics here (note the copywrites? how terribly corporate!).

Greetings Earthlings! Out of the Valley on vacation? Don't forget you can catch us on the webstream. No matter where you are, do you know what's in the water coming out of your tap? (Didn't we already ask you that?). Whistle-blower and Director of New England Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, Kyla Bennett calls in with the low-down. And, The New Boss's signing statements are starting to look like the old boss's signing statements. We'll checkout The Enviro Show Echo Chamber with Jim Hightower on the invasion of the FrankenTrees! Also, the Quote of the week, but first it's time for..... Revenge of the Critters! Mum attacked by killer chipmunk!

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we find Big Oil taking the cue from the far-right Astroturf screamers. They want to disrupt public events. Also, Jim Hightower scares the beejesus out of us with tales of the invasion of the FrankenTrees!

This timely Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Rachel Carson:

"In the age when man has forgotten his origins and is blind to even his most essential needs for survival, water along with other resources has become the victim of his indifference".

In our E-Valley-uation segment: remember The Blob? Well after it terrorized small town PA back in '58 the U.S. Army dropped it in the Arctic thinking it would stay frozen forever, right? Arctic? We're taking The Blob to Pittsburg for the G20 at the end of September and YOU are invited to accompany it! Just drop us an email saying you want to babysit The Blob and we'll get back to you. The address is: enviroshow@valleyfreeradio.org. ALSO This: there's an effort is underway to gut the Mass. Endangered Species Act!

The Globe spins in our E-Valley-uation segment and it's Obama's bad in "Meet the New Boss". The Coming Biomess Enviro Show, Part III

Greetings Earthlings. It's back to the Biomess again! Hang onto your...umm...biosphere! Jana Chicone returns to the studio to update us on the proposed Russell biomass incinerator and Chris Matera calls in from his undisclosed location deep in the forests of New England where he'll speak for the trees. As always we check-in to our E-Valley-uation segment and The Enviro Show Echo Chamber, as well as hear The Quote of The Week, but first it's time for..... Revenge of the Critters! Attack of the trees!

The big news in our E-Valley-uation segment is, of course, the.....ahem...decision? by the Greenfield old boys network....umm...we mean Zoning Board of Appeals, giving the go-ahead for Madera Energy to build their biomass forest incinerator. Bring in the lawyers! Be sure to read Mary Serreze's piece in The Valley Advocate. While you're at it, checkout the new Mass Forest Watch Power Point. And, we MAY have a winner of the Chris Collins Climate Challenge! Only time will tell. Stay tuned!

"The Land of Fake Fires" by Joules Graves from "Plunge" segways us nicely into The Enviro Show Echo Chamber: Who says old news is no news?? We read from the Madera, California Tribune that Madera Power's (Yes, THAT Madera) biomass plant BLEW UP! two years ago. Also, Jeffrey St. Clair answers the disturbing questions: Who is Sam Hamilton? Who is Tom Tidwell? And why is Obama in bed with enemies of the Earth? And this: More corporate privatization of the Commons! This time for solar and geothermal energy! And this hold-over that went unread on the last show, Is it Bush Redux in the Obama White House?. Say it ain't so, O! Finally some GOOD NEWS: A federal judge just struck down the Bush administration's rules limiting protection and citizen oversight of the entire 193-million acre National Forest System.

The Quote of the week comes by way of loyal listener, Lynn from right here in the Valley. At the Greenfield ZBA hearing The Man from Epsilon Associates, Environmental Engineers and Consultants, regarding the proposed Greenfield forest incinerator said:

"There will be no change in air quality because we will be able to purchase offsets".

WHOA! It's like magic. Who needs atmospheric science!

Did you get enough thunderstorms last week? We'll raise one right here in the studio as an introduction to Jana & Chris, both of whom are raising a storm of protest over the oncoming biomess!

Then we scope out the Bus Stop Billboard:

Wednesday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. The Greenfield ZBA Re-vote will be at the Greenfield High School cafeteria. It's a circus! Bring funny hats & noise-makers!

Saturday, July 11, 2009, 10 a.m. to noon. MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS: THE GEOLOGY OF THE PIONEER VALLEY. Discover the stories in the stones around us! The Holyoke Range can tell us much about how the Earth’s crust is shaped. It is a geologically unique area, where we can find evidence of shifting tectonic plates, earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers, and erosion, all in one day’s field trip. This Hitchcock Center trip is based at Skinner State Park and involves some light hiking. Adults and families with children ages 8 and up are welcome. Bring a picnic lunch and stay to picnic on top after the program. Pre-registration is required; please call (413) 256-6006.

The Full of Sludge Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings! Summer Solstice is upon us. Confirming what some have suspected all along: we're full of sludge (at least tonight). Catherine Price, author of The Sludge Report joins us to get into some heavy.....umm...sludge? Naturally, this provides us with the perfect segway into returning to the subject of Madera Energy's proposed forest incinerator, given that they plan to cool it with sewage! We'll hear from Glen on that, we're sure! As usual, we'll checkout other news of the planet in The Enviro Show Echo Chamber, hear the Quote of the Week, and maybe even get to the Bus Stop Billboard, but first it's time for...... Revenge of the Critters! Flies invade White House!. That'll teach you to blow the tops off mountains!

The Enviro show Quote of the week comes from our favorite Founding Father, Thomas Jefferson:

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."

"Try Not to Breathe" by REM takes us to our E-Valley-uation segment where we ponder the possibility of breathing sewage in the Valley! Sound crazy? Well....yeah! AND speaking of crazy: our Chris Collins Climate Challenge is in its third week, having been given new life by.....guess who? Chris Collins!

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber Grist tells us the cure for the population bomb has finally been found by the father of the Gaia Hypothesis. Also this: Is it Bush Redux in the Obama White House?. Say it ain't so, O! And, as we close in on the House vote for the VERY compromised Waxman-Markey Climate/Energy Bill: Will Cap & Trade cause another market meltdown?. For The Enviro Show Blog Bonus Special we offer you the mind-bending film "Home". It's REALLY worth watching (unlike YouTube ditties of brain-addled tweens performing in front of their webcams).

Next is our interview with Catherine which was partly inspired by her piece in Grist's Poop Series. We'll avoid the s-word on the air (it's illegal, after all!) but no such shit to worry about here!

On the Bus Stop Billboard:

The Coming Biomess Enviro Show, Part II

Greetings Earthlings. It's back to the biomess! Margaret Sheehan, Attorney at Law and arch foe of the proposed Greenfield forest incinerator joins us for more discussion on that lamest of greenwashing projects. In our E-Valley-uation segment we hear a report from Mary Serreze on the Greenfield ZBA hearing on the Biomess recently commandeered by the people, and in The Enviro Show Echo Chamber it's more news on humanity's assault on the planet. Of course, we'll checkout the Enviro Show Quote of the Week and The Bus Stop Billboard, but first it's time for.... Revenge of the Critters! Man-critter on the rampage......with a bulldozer! (Note: this doesn't end well for anyone and it could happen in a town near you!).

On to the E-Valley-uation segment. We'll let our friend Mary tell you what happened at YET ANOTHER canceled Greenfield Zoning Board of Appeals hearing on the controversial proposal for a forest incinerator out by the industrial park. And, speaking of Greenfield, we checkout some excellent energy conservation efforts from Greening Greenfield AND tell you all about our latest contest, The Chris Collins Climate Challenge!! That's the good news. For the bad news: BEWARE the Wind Energy Siting Reform Act! Take action HERE.

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we are...sadly...not surprised to learn that the Obama administration has quietly decided to open the way for at least two dozen more "mountaintop removal" projects. And this from Grist: Everything you always wanted to know about the Energy/Climate Bill.....OK, so it's not everything.

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from the folks at Save our Sound. We'll let them tell it in their own words.

"Using you" by Marie Mason from her "Not for Profit" disc is our reminder to loggers everywhere that the system is usually NOT YOUR FRIEND! With the effects on our forests from the Coming Biomess in mind, we have our talk with Margaret Sheehan.

Then we'll wander on down to the Bus Stop Billboard:

The Drop Dead Green Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. Will your grand finale be Earth-friendly? We stare mortality in the face with Carol Coan, trustee of the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Western Massachusetts and environmental journalist Mark Harris, who authored the book “Grave Matters: A Journey Through the Modern Funeral Industry to a Natural Way of Burial.” We'll try once again to run that E-Valley-uation segment on the local biomess controversy (another victim of the clock) and we venture into The Enviro Show Echo Chamber for more news on the planet. Did I mention the Quote of the Week? But first it's time for......Revenge of the Critters! Bees attack White House. BEEware Obamaistas! And especially YOU, Major Garrett!!

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we learn that the Waxman energy bill eases biomass limits (groan). O, and speaking of making things easy for the corporados, checkout what the folks on Beacon Hill have in mind for privatizing public space for Big Wind. Of course the good news big story was Obama’s new mileage rules! That's the big news, now here's the bad news. Our Enviro Show Blog Bonus comes from Grist: Cash from climate criminals shaping Waxman-Markey clean-energy bill.

We go straight into that E-Valley-uation segment that got blown off last time. Let's visit the local controversy about proposed biomass plants for Brattleboro, Greenfield, Springfield, Russell and Palmer (did i miss any?) with dueling screeds from some of the major players. Interesting that Mass Sierra Club's Elisa Campbell is boosting incinerators while her club isn't!. And this: Western Mass Electric supports mountain top removal. Have we got a great proposal for them!

"Empty me" by Congress of Starlings from the "Albedo" album takes us to our interview with Carol, who will be in the studio with us, with Mark calling in on the tele. That will be about The End, but not the end of the show (which, as you know, must go on) because next is the.......

The Greening Greenfield Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. You'd think a town with a name like Greenfield would be plenty green already, no? We talk with Nancy Hazard, Co-chair of the group Greening Greenfield about projects they're working on. Like always, we'll inspire you with The Enviro Show Quote of the Week, depress you with bad news from The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and confuse you with our E-Valley-uation segment, but first it's time for....Revenge of the Critters! BLACK FLIES!

On our Enviro Show Quote of the Week we confirm what far-right ideologues have always suspected: we repeat the words of Karl Marx!

"The development of civilization and industry in general has always shown itself so active in the destruction of forests that everything that has been done for their conservation and production is completely insignificant in comparison. "

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber the U.S. Climate Emergency Council tells us that Congressman Boucher, who took $176,554 from the coal industry in 2007-2008, is spearheading an effort in Congress to urge the sponsors of the "American Clean Energy Security Act" to give away free permits to our nation's biggest polluters. Giving these permits away would result in massive profits for polluters and hurt working families. Here's the action link for that one. And this from the other coast: Bulk of forest biomass fuel to come from national forests!. Also this: U.S. Chamber of Converse (did i say that?) actually taking a hit from its' own membership! And finally (and we mean FINALLY! Obama budget rescinds energy industry tax breaks!

In our Enviro Show E-Valley-uation segment we briefly visit the local controversy about biomass with dueling screeds from some of the major players. Interesting that Mass Sierra Club's Elisa Campbell is boosting incinerators while her club isn't!.

"The Tree", by Marie Mason from "Not For Profit" takes us to our interview with Nancy. Then it's on to the Bus Stop Billboard:

Thursday, May 14, 9:00 p.m. the Greenfield Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing on Pioneer Renewable Energy's request for a special permit to allow a 47 MW Biomass Burning Power Plant to be built on Butternut Street. The Coming Biomess Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. Eric takes over on the board for this one 'cuz Glen went and scheduled some kind of meeting (what was he thinking??) We return to the issue of public lands in the Commonwealth being sacrificed for a slew of proposed biomass energy plants (some, like Glen for instance, would say INCINERATORS!), all in the name of .....what? the climate crisis? sustainability? pick a buzz-word, any buzz-word! Chris Matera of Mass Forest Watch returns to these microphones with that story. And this JUST IN: we may be laying the Swine Flu Outbreak at the feet of Big Meat! We'll also checkout some national enviro news in the Enviro Show Echo Chamber, hear the Quote of the Week and some tunes, but first it's time for..... Revenge of the Critters! Talk about a biomess: Ruffed grouse calls for destruction of Massachusetts forests!

The sounds of Spring Peepers brings us to our Enviro Show Quote of the Week. This one from FDR:

"A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people."

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber it's a two-fer from the New York Times: EPA clears way for Greenhouse gas rules. And in an accompanying piece: Company hopes to store CO2 beneath ocean. The Other Oceanic Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. We'll try not to go overboard about the deep blue sea once again, but you never know. There's pirates out there! Jackie Savitz Pollution Campaign Director, and Senior Scientist at Oceana joins us to discuss the human impact on the Seven Seas. Here on The Enviro Show blog we'll take you out on an Ocean Adventure with Jean-Michel Cousteau to Garbage Island. Back in the studio we'll forgo the sea-legs and content ourselves with visits to The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and rather than swear like a sailor (and risk losing our FCC license) we'll settle for The Enviro Show Quote of the Week. Also, the E-Valley-uation Segment returns with a vengeance, but first it's time for.... Revenge of the Critters! Lobster attacks!

The Enviroshow Quote of the Week comes from Rachel Carson:

“To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of year, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.”

We'll have some genuine whale songs to take you to the E-Valley-uation segment. Remember last time we spoke about some breaking news? Yes, The Earth First! Roadshow is coming to the Valley!! Last year, Al Gore called the blockading of construction sites of new power plants an appropriate response to the environmental crisis facing the planet. But this was no new mandate to Earth First!, who has been advocating grassroots direct action to protect and restore the planet for near 30 years. Now, the Earth First! Movement has launched its largest roadshow since the early 1980’s. The tour will include presentations, performances and trainings on environmental civil disobedience and will be making 100 stops in 30 states. The traveling group includes activists from various bio-regions representing ecological campaigns against logging, mining, road expansion, ocean exploitation, energy infrastructure and urban development. Also on the agenda of these events will be discussions of a new wave of political repression, coined the “Green Scare”, where environmentalists have experienced a documented increase in government surveillance, harassment and even entrapment.

The Roadshow will be at Amherst College at O'Connor Commons, Charles Pratt Hall on Thursday, April 23rd, 4:30PM-6:30pm for a participatory presentation followed by direct actions workshops at 7:30PM. For info on that contact our favorite student activist, Alissa at: aayden11@amherst.edu. This event is sponsored by the Amherst College Responsible Endowment Coalition and the Green Amherst Project. Co-sponsors are the UMass Eco-Coalition, part of UMass EarthWeek 2009 and your very own Enviro Show.

In addition, the Roadshow will be at The Evolution Café in Florence at 6pm on Friday, 24th following an all-day tour of state lands under the axe. Contact us about that gig: enviroshow@valleyfreeradio.org. Do not miss this, guys.

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we find Ocean mercury on the increase. Also, as you may have heard, a giant mass of Antarctic ice is "set for collapse". AND, speaking of The Poles, Hillary Clinton is said to be seeking greater protections for them (No, not THOSE Poles, the POLES!). Finally, last time we spoke with Linda Glover about the dwindling Tuna population, right? Well, last week we learned that the European Union countries adopted new rules to help restore endangered bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. How about this rule: STOP FISHING!

"Disection of the Squid", by RoMak & the Space Pirates will take us to our interview with Jackie Savitz, Pollution Campaign Director, and Senior Scientist at Oceana.

Then it's on to the Bus Stop Billboard:

The Oceanic Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings (and matees!). We are once again all wet on The Enviro Show as we dip into the majesty of (and travesties against) the sea. Linda Glover, co-author of "Ocean - An illustrated atlas" published by National Geographic, calls-in with news from The Deep. It's not Dress Like a Pirate Day here in the studio, but we may steal some appropriate booty for you to bury away. Also we'll delve into more nautical news in The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and the Quote of The Week, as well as see what's happening around The Valley eco-wise in The Bus Stop Billboard, but first it's time for........ Revenge of the Critters! Jellyfish shutdown nuke!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week, in keeping with our theme, comes from none other than Capt. Paul Watson of the no nonsense direct action group, Sea Shepherd: "[Cape Wind] is a threat to seabirds and as a marine wildlife conservation organization, we represent our clients, marine wildlife and this Cape Wind project is not in their interest".

The Enviro Show Echo Chamber is getting mighty crowded! We have this from Grist: Lessons from the Exxon Valdez. Also, an Enviro Show Blog Bonus: Democracy Now! on the 20th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. And checkout the three-fer: a Take Action Link on pirate fishing operations using harmful fishing methods that damage marine habitats and injure or kill other marine life; a link to a How Green is My Seafood Quiz, and another Take Action link to cancel new oil and gas leases in the Polar Bear Seas, home to endangered polar bears and other imperiled wildlife. The Too Many Humans Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings, there are way too many of us two-leggeds taking up space and resources here on Mother Earth. What are we gonna' do about it? Stephanie Kraft of the Valley Advocate addressed this issue in a column a few weeks back and now she's in the studio to help us crunch the numbers. Soooo, what do we need? Negative Population Growth? A Voluntary Human Extinction Movement? Enough with the liberals taboo, let's talk! Also, we're coming up on the 30th anniversary of the nuke meltdown at Three Mile Island. We'll listen to clip from the re-release of local media artist, Robbie Leppzer's two-hour radio documentary on that frightening event in U.S. history. As always, we'll visit the Enviro Show Echo Chamber , the Quote of the Week and the Bus Stop Billboard, but first it's time for....Revenge of the Critters! Imprisoned chimp stockpiles weapons!

"All the People", by Dyniss takes us to the Enviro Show Quote of the Week where we once again give you a two-fer: we quote ourselves (shameless, self-serving tree huggers that we are!) with a special ZPG reading by our in-house poet, D.O. as well as this from the late eminent economist Kenneth Boulding:

"Anyone who believes exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist."

After the clip from Robbie's documentary on TMI we move on to the Enviro Show Echo Chamber where we find that the EPA plans to regulate coal ash (whoa!, we've got some of that right here in the Valley). And this from the New York Times: Science returns to the White House. Welcome back! In the Irony of Ironies Department: No more glaciers in Glaciel National Park?

And, following our visit with Stephanie Kraft (and maybe some irate calls from you?) we head over to the Bus Stop Billboard:

The King Coal's Getting His Butt Kicked Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. On Sunday, right here in the Happy Valley we took part in the Anti-Coal Protest at Mount Tom. You can read an account of the rally on Peter Vickery's blog here. You've no doubt heard us on past Enviro Shows bad-mouthing that old coal-burning clunker by Mt. Tom in Holyoke, not far over the Northampton line (I-91 and Rts. 5 & 10 pass right by it). According to a press release from Peter Vickery, "the coal-burning Mount Tom power station generates more than one million tons of CO2 annually....which is reason enough to stage a peaceful protest at the GDF Suez-owned plant."

Soooo, we never made it to DC for the Capitol Climate Action but you can read about that big bash on the link below. On with the show! Of course we'll once again point out that burning coal for electricity is a bit like eating junk food for your health. We bring you the sounds of protest from the Capitol Climate Action in DC, as well as a report on the PowerShift09 Conference held prior to the action. As always we'll delve into the Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the news and checkout the Enviro Show Quote of the week, AND some sounds of the Amazon Jean brought back with her, but first it'll be time for.......Revenge of the Critters! Illegal loggers pay the ultimate price! Looks like there really was a tiger in THEIR tank!!

On to the Quote of the Week, this from Gore-al: "If you're a young person looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now, and not done, I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration"
(timing is everything, yes?).

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber the New York Times asks the musical question: Is America Ready to Quit Coal?. And this link from Grist: Cap & persuade, the corporados lobby for destroying the planet. Our Enviro Show Blog Bonus? It's Democracy Now! on Greenhouse Emissions Rising at Alarming, Unexpected Rate (we're not the only ones doing doom & gloom!) AND another BONUS!! Prepare to laugh yur' ass off with Clean Coal!

After our interviews with Amherst College students fresh from the action in DC and any random soundbites we may've picked up on the trail, we'll have a look at the Bus Stop Billboard:

The King Coal's Getting Old Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. Now that we're in the Obama Era will Old King Coal still have his way with Washington? Both Obama and Biden support so-called clean coal. Secretary Chu? Not so much. There's been a lot of debate about whether clean coal is possible, or if today's limited funding wouldn't be better directed toward solar, wind, wave and biofuel technology. Alissa Ayden from the Amherst College Responsible Endowment Coalition joins us in the studio. She took part in a student protest at Bank of America in Amherst last November over BOA's support of King Coal. And, another Enviro Show EXCLUSIVE: we air for the first time EVER,on any station anywhere, Tom Neilson's latest tune, "Babies In These Mountains". Tom will call-in from coal country and we may get a call from Peter Vickery as well, concerning a demo at Mt. Tom on March 1st. We'll find more dirt on coal (not too hard, that!) in our Enviro Show Echo Chamber and the E-Valley-uation segments. Also, the Enviro Show Quote of the Week gets us all kinds of weighty in the heart & soul department, and we get a road call from Tom himself, but first it's time for....Revenge of the Critters! It's deja vu all over again! Birds demand airspace and the return of abducted chicks! (this one got pre-empted last time).

Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from the prez:

"The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril. There may still be disputes about exactly how much we're contributing to the warming of the earth's atmosphere and how much is naturally occurring, but what we can be scientifically certain of is that our continued use of fossil fuels is pushing us to a point of no return. And unless we free ourselves from a dependence on these fossil fuels and chart a new course on energy in this country, we are condemning future generations to global catastrophe." - Barack Obama

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we start off with a blog bonus here. And, it's goodnews/bad news on Obama's stimulus package. Also, those tar-sands in Canada we spoke about awhile back are dead ducks, literally! And this: Two more coal burning power plants down the tubes! Wait, did i say two? Make that three!.

The premier radio broadcast of "Babies in These Mountains" with Tom Neilson & Sue Kranz, and Derrik Jordan on fiddle takes us to the newly revived E-Valley-uation Segment of the show where we turn to Alissa Ayden for a students take on Old King Cole and responsible investment.

Finally it's time to scope out the Bus Stop Billboard:

Also participating will be authors and activists Bill McKibben and Wendell Berry. Go to: www.capitolclimateaction.org.

That about does it for us and Old King Coal (we wish). Jean's in the Amazon listening to her Mother. She'll be back next time with tales to tell. Stay tuned!
