An Eastern Forests Enviro Show

Greetings Earthlings. Once again we head into the woods, this time with Andy Kerr card-carrying conservationist and Czar of The Larch Company and consultant on environmental and conservation issues. Andy's recent blog post is titled "Forests in the American East, Part 3: A Vision of the Return of Old-Growth Forests" which sounds exactly like what we've been talking about on this show........forever! [UPDATE: Interview HERE ] As always, we will also invite you to meet this week's Fool-on-the-Hill and those whose Brains Were Small, as well as a heads up that "It's the Climate Crisis, Stupid!" and more but first it's time for.......Revenge of the Critters! You may have heard Black Bears don't attack people? It depends.

This week's Fool-on-the-Hill is  a two-fer. First is Rep. Keith Self, (Repug.-Texas,) a thoughts & prayer guy whose district includes Allen where the "Right Wing Death Squad" monster killed eight people with an AR-15 assault weapon. Texas! Rep. Self hopefully wasn't representing his district when he stated the people demanding gun control, rather than strictly offering thoughts and prayers, "don’t believe in an almighty God … who is absolutely in control of our lives." And speaking of fascists, MAGA Death Cult member Sen. Tommy Tuberville  said recently, "We are losing in the military — so fast — our readiness in terms of recruitment, And why? I can tell you why. Because the Democrats are attacking our military, saying we need to get out the white extremists, the white nationalists, people that don’t believe in [President Biden's] agenda." Asked whether he believed white nationalists should be allowed in the military, Tuberville said: “They call them that. I call them Americans." Like we always say, fools rush in defense of fascism where wise folks fear to go.

Of course, both those fools probably think there's no climate emergency but guess what? "It's the Climate Crisis, Stupid!" Don't take our word for it though, how about findings from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's April State of the Climate report, released Monday?  "Seven different billion-dollar or more extreme weather events struck the U.S. during the first four months of 2023." And this from CNN: "Ocean surface heat is at record-breaking levels. Temperatures began climbing in mid-March and skyrocketed over the course of several weeks, leaving scientists scrambling to figure out exactly why."  And finally this, "The World Meteorological Organization reports increased odds that El NiƱo, the global weather pattern often tied to intense heat, will arrive by fall." Want an extended growing season? Be careful what you wish for!

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we echo The Guardian on a report that "The man often touted as the godfather of AI has quit Google, citing concerns over the flood of misinformation, the possibility for AI to upend the job market, and the “existential risk” posed by the creation of a true digital intelligence." Sooo, if the Climate Crisis isn't enough to freak you out how about....killer robots?? Wait, can they be programmed to go after fascists? If any of this concerns you here's an Enviro Show Action Link.  And speaking of links, The Endangered Species Act is 50 years old this year and our friends at the Center for Biological Diversity have an action linkfest to chose from HERE or you might want to Chalk this one up for the critters!

Interesting CNN was sounding the alarm on climate chaos on the same week they provided His Malignancy, the King of Chaos with a national platform to poison minds with obvious lies and distortions? CNN even allowed the MAGA Death Cult to pack the audience. We're thinking that operation might qualify for another "Their Brains Were Small & They Died" nomination? Your thoughts?

How about another Enviro Show Quote of the Week?

“To this boy of New England the May morning was like faint music in the woods again, some unspeakably exciting foregathering of events far in the deep shade of morning pines, all of it stirring there. He could hear it all faintly in the woods from far away, from across the fields and pastures, in the cool misty morning air, and he wanted to go there too.”

― Jack Kerouac
